Do you want to meet me in the (mid)west? Yawp. Do you want to meet in The Grove? Yawp. Do you want to meet me at The Ready Room? Okay!
Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern make up the cleverly named Sofi Tukker. The NYC duo turned heads with “Best Friend,” which garnered airplay across the satellite radio spectrum last year, but Apple put the world on notice when it used the song to promo the iPhone X.
While “Best Friend” is a crowd pleaser, “Drinkee,” from the self-released EP Soft Animals, is an catchy Bossa nova trance dance tune sung in Portuguese by Ms. Hawley-Weld. It was also the first song Sophie and Tucker recorded after meeting at Brown University. The song ultimately became the glue that solidified the duo in their pursuit of making music together, and it led to a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording.
Their debut LP, Treehouse, released earlier this year, is a “dust your shoulders off” pulsating party album that makes it feel as if you’ve wandered into a club, the only one sober, and it’s the peak feel good moment of the night. Believe it or not, you too can have that kind of experience for just $15 at the Ready Room on Tuesday night.
You’ll get much more than an incredible night of music and dancing: Sofi Tukker has partnered with PLUS1 (a charity established by Arcade Fire), and $1 from every ticket sold will go to support a local LGBTQ organization and the Trevor Project’s work providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth. --CW
