We last caught Austin-based Walker Lukens opening for Spoon at The Pageant in May. Lukens and his backing band, the Side Arms, quickly impressed an unsuspecting, near-capacity crowd. His credentials have gone from “guest pass” to “VIP” quickly since collaborating with Spoon’s drummer, Jim Eno.
The first Lukens-Eno collaboration led to the single “Every Night,” a spunky lil tune with a punk ambiance that spills into a Brian Seltzer vibe. “Every Night” has been streamed over a million times on Spotify.
The success of “Every Night” led to a second collaboration with Eno at his Public Hi-Fi Studios in Austin, and Lifted was birthed. From Lifted came “Never Understood,” a smoky cocktail-lounge ditty that spent eight weeks on the Specialty Commercial Radio Charts.
Success doesn’t always beget success, but Eno and Lukens teamed up again and released another EP, Ain’t Got No Reason in April 2017. The accolades for this EP came in the form of festival invites from the likes of Bonnaroo, Firefly, Austin City Limits Festival, Free Press Summerfest, Middle of the Map and now he can add LouFest to the list.
Talking to Lukens at his merch booth back in May, he said he was hoping to make the LouFest final cut and he had his fingers crossed. Well, Mr. Lukens got his wish and he and his Side Arms will surely be a highlight of this year’s festival. --CW
